firefox 2: developer tool bar

I installed the developer tool bar to my firefox, found that quite useful. Working on CSS also changed my perception on this technology and I realise it’s more powerful then I thought. I like to see results rather than digging deep in technology the whole day without achieving anything, CSS can achieve what it intends to do quickly, just the way I like it :)

National Toilet

Have you got your “My Toilet Map” yet?

Did you say “What the” before you read this:

Apparently, our government is asking everyone visiting or living in Australia to build their own… “My Toilet Map”.

According to the federal government’s national toilet site, if you are not happy with the existing ones, you can “suggest a toilet”. You can even subscribe to the toilet newsletter if you are like…a very organised person.

I guess it won’t hurt to bookmark it. One day you may thank me or our government for this :)

Moving Image in Production

You may already know that many movies made in Sydney often have a scene or two set up at Martin Place. The Matrix, Mission Impossible, The Son of the Mask, just to name a few. But this one is a little different…

First I saw a few actors in uniform.

Movie Sydney 03

—-

Then I found out who was the major character. It was someone larger than life. People in uniform were not going to appear in the movie at all.

Movie Sydney 02

This is another shot showing how things work in the movie production.

Movie Sydney 01

I was actually on my way to a concert when I saw this production in progress at Martin Place. Didn’t quite have enough time to find out what the movie was. Let me know if you have any thought or know anything about it :)

Project Draft

There are some uncertainties that need to be addressed before a sensible project proposal can be finalized.

One uncertainty is obviously “you don’t know what you don’t know.” It doesn’t seem to be wise to set the bar too high as you may end up with a monster project that you can never finished. But on the other hand, we are here to learn something new, we still need to stretch ourselves a little and move outside our comfort zone a bit.

I am looking forward to learning a bit more on php from the up coming lectures so I can make an educated estimation on what’s is achievable. Meanwhile, I would hold on to my draft and update it as the subject progresses.

This weekend

There are a couple of events in Sydney that may be worth seeing, particularly if you are from overseas.

The 1st one is the New South Wales state election today. It happens once every 4 years and involves a lot of people. You also get to see all the major political parties and what they are doing in Australia. Forget about politics, it could be quite an eye opening experience if you haven’t seen it before. The Sydney Town Hall is a good place to see this. (That’s also where I go to vote today:)

Sydney Town Hall

Another one is the Greek festival at Darling Harbour. You heard about the ancient civilization, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and all that. This is a good opportunity to check out what the Greek community is doing in Australia. I think you can find entertainment today and tomorrow (Sunday) at Darling Harbour.

Flash: Good one

This is one of the best use of flash I’ve seen. The initiate download is very fast and it gives you the option to see what interests you.

You can also switch sound on and off any time. The option to skip the whole flash thing leaves me almost no excuse to dislike them.

The first time I heard of the product was when I saw this flash. Its features and benefits are very well presented by an effective visual presentation in the flash. It also gives you the feel of being contemporary and trendy. Not too flashy not too boring. Just spot on.

See it live here. Oral-B.

Firefox

We are recommended to use firefox instead of other browsers for the purpose of learning proper technology in the right way. So here is my firefox story.

syd-firefox

I love firefox. But I haven’t actually been using it for long. Less than a year perhaps.

As many people are still doing, I used to use internet explorer only. I used Netscape too, but that was quite a while ago. Internet explorer was available everywhere and it worked fine for me. When I first heard about firefox and Opera all that, I thought like everyone else, I was doing fine browsing the net, why would I waste time to try out another browser? it’s just another browser with possibly less features, right?

I changed my perception completely after trying out firefox. I don’t like waiting on the net, so I always do a bit of multi-tasking when I browse the net. Firefox’s tag approach allows me to open many pages without having to open many browser windows. It’s much convenient and it doesn’t make my screen look too crowded.

You can also install plugins quite easily in firefox. The latest plugin I installed was for blogging. With this plugin, I don’t even have to open the blog host’s page to do posting. I can post notes and photos to many blogs within the browser. Firefox is like a work station with a large number of expandable tools ready to help you to do whatever you want to do online easily. The plugins always work so well and so easy to install and unstall.

Anyone ever install anything in windows would notice that there isn’t such thing as clean installation. You always ended up with some junks in your system even after you unstall them. Quite often you don’t even know what and where they are. You just notice your computer gets slower and slower. Fortunately, trying out firefox plugins are a completely different experience. You can uninstall them without leaving a trace. It’s an risk free experience.

Firefox is also highly customisable. I make the viewing area of my browser very large without scarifying any features I want. The result is a much more pleasant browsing experience.

I had this good experience with firefox before knowing the reason behind it. I was convinced there were smart people doing an excellent job on it. I made a decision to switch from internet explorer to firefox.

This technology subject helps me understand the reasons behind the convincing advantages of firefox. They develop internet standard and conform to it to produce this work of excellence.

I haven’t given up internet explorer completely mainly because it has higher compatibility with other Microsoft products, which I do use from time to time. Try to copy a table from a page to excel with firefox and internet explorer, you will see the differences.

Today, over 90% of my browsing is done with firefox :)

Subject progress reflection

I’ve done 4 weeks Digital Media Technology so far. After the first week of lecture, I knew it’s something I really want to learn, I particularly look forward to starting the website project. I like Tim’s idea of submitting our work electronically only. It makes sense.

The second week was a lot more technical and fundamental. We looked into the mechanism of network and how it functions. I thought that was a bit too technical for me. But it would be good to know I supposed.

Week 3 was a little more interesting. We looked into client side technology and started to connect to the MIM host server via ftp. After class, a few of us stay back to help each other out which was great. I learnt to validate websites according to internet standard, which was quite useful.

We just moved on to server side technology this week, which is absolutely essential. We can’t have a website without a server, so it’s good to know how things on the server side work.

Australia Food

I went with a couple of classmates to have lunch at Broadway on Saturday. Enjoy it thoroughly! (Thanks for the recommendation if you are reading this post.)

The food was great and half way through a few new friends joined in, it was great fun.

It reminds me that I can share some of my understanding on Australian food with you here.

At Broadway, I had king prawn fried rice for lunch. Saturday night, I had steak in mushroom sauce with baked potatoes and salad for dinner at home. Had mangos and water melon after dinner.

On Sunday, I had just a sandwich for lunch as I was out and I didn’t want to be too full before dinner, which was already planned. In the evening, I went to a restaurant to have green curry chicken and pad tai for dinner. It’s was superb.

I’d better declare that I don’t always eat out that much at the weekends. I do that every now and then. This weekend turned out to be quite a good example for showcasing what Australian food has become. Wouldn’t life be a bit monotone if we limit ourselves to certain type of food just because that is what our parents prepared for us in our childhood? I am so glad that the so called Australian food has today included such a great variety.

So what’s Australian food? I don’t know the academic definition. For me, Australian food is clearly everything yummy you can find in the world :)

I recommend everyone I know from overseas to try out the variety of gourmet food in Sydney. It makes study, working or whatevery you wants to do here a more rewarding experience:)

There are only a few things that are served in Australian restaurants which I haven’t tried yet. If no one posts any message against it in the next few days, I’ll tell you about them.
